CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM DETECTOR ACT

Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector Act, Illinois State Law – Effective Jan. 1, 2007

Carbon monoxide is called “the silent killer” because it is odorless, tasteless and invisible. In the United States approximately 200 to 300 people die each year and thousands are sickened by accidental exposure to carbon monoxide gas. Many victims are overcome in their sleep, unaware of the elevated carbon monoxide levels in their homes. Therefore, beginning Jan. 1, 2007, a new state law in Illinois (Public Act 094-0741) will require that a carbon monoxide detector be within 15 feet of every sleeping room in the home. A dwelling unit that does not have fossil fuel burning appliances or an attached garage can receive an exemption from the local building official. Contact your local building department for additional information.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Headache
  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Chest pain
  • Heart palpitations
  • Lethargy
  • Confusion
  • Sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Stumbling
  • Slurred speech
  • Blurred vision
  • Trouble breathing
  • Seizures

Carbon monoxide alarms typically range from $20 to $50 in price, and are available in different forms, battery operated, plug in or hard wired into your electrical system. A combination smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector is also available. Installation and operation instructions can be found on the packaging. You may contact your local fire or building department for assistance.
