Permits Are a Privilege

Often times the importance of acquiring a construction permit is understated and overlooked. In actuality, the building permit is a legal document or license that grants permission to begin construction. Without a permit construction might not meet the area building code standards that are safeguards adopted to assure important safety requirements and environmental standards are met.

The review process involved in granting a permit covers all necessary documentation from which a statement is issued that a construction project has met building code mandates. Careful attention is given to zoning compliance for permissible distances from thoroughfares and appropriate lot coverage to the proper installation of heaters and fireplaces. Without a permit, or operating with a permit that does not apply to work under way, a stop-work order can be issued. In the same way a driver's license is a privilege, so is a building permit. Permits can be revoked at any time.

Not only are building permits necessary for public and residential safety, they also can prevent the parties involved in construction from potential liabilities and insurance issues.
