Keep Pools Safe for Everyone

As a firefighter, one of the worst and most devastating scenarios imaginable is a child's death. This scenario is amplified and even more devastating when a child drowns in his/her own backyard pool.

The International Residential Code has the requirements in place to ensure above and below ground pools are installed safely to provide protection to children from pools. A properly installed guard will prevent children from entering a pool unsupervised. The IRC has the construction requirements for guards and gates.

It also requires that proper electrical installation be in place to make sure the pool is safe and enjoyable. Chapter (41) of the International Resident Code requires that all electrical installation be in place and the Appendix "G" covers requirements for safe barriers. It is important to remember the appendix must be adopted in order for it to be enforced.

B & ;F Technical Code Services, Inc., has prepared a multiple page handout, which includes a review and inspection checklist for swimming pools. At your request, one free copy will be mailed to you. Simply place your request by calling: 847-490-1443 and ask for our client specialist.
